Welcome to 2nd Baldock Cub Scouts. We meet on a Wednesday evening between 6:30pm and 8pm during term time only, usually in the Catholic Church Hall off Providence Way but sometimes elsewhere if an activity requires it. Occasionally we will also ask the Cubs to participate in an activity during a weekend or to attend a Sunday parade with other groups.
We have two uniformed leaders and encourage parent helpers to join in too on an ad hoc basis. The Cub Leader is Diana Marshall (Akela to the Cubs) and she has a Sectional Assistant, Ros Wing.
If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact us or speak to us at the start or end of a meeting.
We ask that you keep us up to date with any changes to your contact details, particularly mobile numbers and email addresses, as information is often sent out via email and occasionally by text if the information is short notice.
Our aim in Cubs is to have fun whilst learning about ourselves, others and the world around us. We do this through games and activities which focus on different themes each term. The cubs achieve activity badges and challenge badges to show what they have learnt. Occasionally we may ask for a small contribution towards an activity that is undertaken with the aid of external resources.
In Cubs there are 7 challenge badges and we hope that, by the end of their time with us, each cub will have achieved them all and so gain their Chief Scouts Silver Award. There are also 14 staged badges, which follow the child up through the group, and 36 activity badges, some of which we are unable to do as part of the group due to the requirements of the badge. However, we encourage your cub to undertake these badges in their own time if they wish to do so. These badges are currently:
|Animal Carer||Book reader||Chef|
|Hobbies||Home help||Martial arts|
|Physical recreation||Skater||Sports enthusiast|
|Musician – all stages||Paddle sports – Stage 2 onwards||Sailing - Stage 2 onwards|
If your child undertakes any of the above badges or does anything inside or outside of school that you feel is significant to them, we would always love to hear about it. If you would like more information on any of the badges the Cubs can achieve please follow this link to the UK Scout website http://members.scouts.org.uk/supportresources/search/?cat=12,67. For those of you who prefer a hardcopy then the badge information can be found in the book “Cubs Badges and Awards Book (and how to earn them)”. This can be bought from the Scout shop in Letchworth, online or is sometimes stocked by North Herts Schoolwear in Letchworth and costs £4. On being invested your new Cub will be provided with the “Cubs Activity Log Book” which gives an overview of all the badges and provides general information on Cubs.
At 2nd Baldock cubs we usually try to have two long weekends away from home. One is a visit to PGL in Lincolnshire during March and the other is the Summer Camp in the Harmer Green woods near Welwyn which is under canvas, usually in June or July. We encourage the cubs to participate in one or both of these weekends each year. There is a cost associated with both weekends and we ask that you speak to Akela or Ros should you have any financial difficulty.
A small subscription is also payable at the start of each term which goes towards the administration costs of the group. This is currently £20 per term.
We hope that your cub will enjoy their time with us and will continue on afterwards up to our Scout group.
Yours in Scouting
Akela and Ros
